Environmentally Friendly Transport

Railway transport is our main domain. Railways provide a relatively sound manner of trafficking large cargoes over long distances. Trains have a much lower environmental impact than cars and planes. Yet they alone are not able to serve all of our customers, hence AWT also provides other types of transport in the form of freight forwarding. To maximise efficiency, we also make use of combined transport.

Energy Consumption

We have been monitoring the consumption of individual types of energies (electric power, heat, coke, driving fuels and water) in our workplaces over the long term.

Energy consumption has been decreasing over the long term, since 2005 by approximately 18%. Yet the price of electricity has been rising at an even more significant rate. Therefore, we will continue to pay great attention to this area.

Drinking and service water consumption per employee has been decreasing too, in recent years by an average of 3% annually.

The total fuel consumption has increased in the past few years, primarily as a result of our taking over several companies. The higher consumption has, however, been offset by the growth of the company's total revenue.

Waste

We have attained great progress when it comes to waste management. In the past five years, waste production has been reduced (in terms of unit of company revenue) by more than fifty per cent. Our business activities are based on transportation services, not production, hence two thirds of the waste is formed by scrap iron from old wagons that can be reprocessed and reused.

Reclamation Works

We possess 50 years of experience with land reclamation gained within the group engaged in black coal mining. This represents unique know-how that can also be brought to bear in other locations where it is necessary to tackle old environmental burdens. We undertake nature conservation and landscape protection, create greenery and watercourse treatment, operate waste disposal sites and facilities for waste disposal and treatment.

Prevention and Inspections

Our business activities (not only in the environmental protection area) are subject to regular inspections carried out by the respective authorities as well as external auditors. Over the past five years, we have not once violated the valid legal regulations, been levied any sanctions and fines or caused any accident that could endanger the environment. We believe that has in large part been the result of our preparation for a possible emergency situation we have paid great attention to.
